Artisans

The process starts from a plant - Indigo.
Once harvested, the leaves of indigo are fermented in a large barrel with water, limestone, and rice liquor.

Using hot wax from beeswax or paraffin, artists meticulously apply intricate patterns onto cotton and silk fabrics, allowing the designs to emerge through a time-honored wax-resist dyeing process. Once dyed in indigo, the fabric is boiled to remove the wax, revealing stunning motifs that symbolize folklore, migration stories, and the natural world—an artistic language used by the Miao, Gejia, and Buyi people instead of a written script.
